GREAT HARWOOD

1603

Found with a presentment concerning a riot in Thromynge More Lane in Great Harwood, on 30 May 1603, between the servants of Robert Hesketh and Christofer Cunliffe. Not to scale, distorted and made to an unusual alignment the plan names the lane where the "riot" took place and the roads to important wool and cloth centres at Halifax, Manchester and Preston are shown. The plan also confirms that most of the farm land was already held in severalty by this time. Note also "the Diqe newly maid betwixt harwood and Rishton" towards the right of the plan, dug in 1598 this is still a feature in the landscape. Transcription of the text has been added as the original writing is impossible to decipher at the size shown.
