The Smith family of 64 Queen Street

Nancy Smith
nee Baron (1869 – 1946)

Nancy Smith was not only the mother of three noteworthy sons and a daughter, who she raised alone whilst running a business after her husband died in 1907 aged 39, but also a lady of note in her own right, as her obituary in The Blackburn Times, Friday January 25th, 1946 shows: :

Death of a Talented Harwood Lady

At one time a regular contributor to the Poet's Corner in “The Blackburn Times”, Mrs Nancy Smith, formerly of Great Harwood, who died at the home of her son Dr W. Smith at Sheffield, was interred at Great Harwood Cemetery on Tuesday. She wrote an article on “Great Harwood Fair 60 Years Ago” which appeared in the “Times” in August 1939, and her other literary efforts included a character sketch of John Mercer, the former Great Harwood chemist, inventor of the process known as mercerising. Aged 76, Mrs. Smith was the sister of Miss H. Baron of Spring Gardens, Waddington, and of the late County Alderman J.W. Baron JP, who lived at the Cedars, and widow of Mr J.H. Smith, formerly of the Beehive drapers, Great Harwood. She leaves three sons (one a missionary in China who was released from Japanese internment) and a daughter.
