From the group's founder Steve Garside

Great Harwood is a special place. People who leave, whether it is for distant shores or closer to home, still remain attached by an invisible, unbreakable thread. It is indeed a special place and one that remains in the hearts of those that treasure their memories of the town.

Why should this be? Is it the beautiful countryside that borders the town- those magical sylvan places such as Bowley or Dean, places that people are drawn to on their return so that they may walk the lanes once again? Is it the parks, the streets, the shops or maybe it is the friendly, down-to-earth humour of the townsfolk that make up this wonderful community? I know not but it certainly is an amazing town, quite unlike any other.

I left in 1984 but I still hold a special place in my heart for Harwood. This inspired me, some ten years ago, to register the Great Harwood Appreciation Society as a Yahoo Group not quite knowing exactly what I was creating. It grew quite rapidly into a thriving on-line community reflecting the humour and character of the town itself. I soon realised that I had created something special- it began with a letter posted up in the old library and soon grew into a time-consuming pastime. I offered John the position of manager and with a heavy heart handed it over. I am thrilled that it continues to thrive and gives everyone a chance to take a stroll around the streets of Harwood, albeit in the virtual world that shapes our global community. May Harwood prosper and may this doughty little group continue to play such an important role in such a splendid place. Let the thread remain unbroken.
