Joining GHAS and 'arrodgen
Hopefully the following is an understandable explanation of how to acquire a Yahoo ID and join the Great Harwood Yahoo Group but is the same for 'arrodgen. If you have any difficulties please make use of the Yahoo Help section - it is very good - or email me at
greatharwood-owner@yahoogroups.com
The Great Harwood Appreciation Society is operated on the Internet using the Yahoo Groups system. To join the Group go to the Group Homepage, here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/greatharwood/
Find the 'Join this Group' button in the top right hand corner. Click on this link. You are taken to the sign in page. If you have a Yahoo ID, then enter it and your password and follow the prompts. Please read (2).
If you don't already have a Yahoo ID, find the 'Don't have a Yahoo ID? window and click the 'Sign up' link and follow the prompts.
(1) Getting a Yahoo ID
You are taken to the Yahoo Sign Up page and the Sign Up questions. Questions with a red star must be answered. However, I'm a great believer in telling 'em nowt. So I would suggest you only supply truthful answers to your name and perhaps, gender.
Preferred content question - select 'Yahoo! United Kingdom'
Think carefully about your Yahoo ID name - try to think up one that is easy to remember, but has not been taken by one of the other millions of people who have gone through this application process. You will be asked to check if your proposed ID is available - if it isn't, alternatives may be offered, or you can try a another name altogether.
Don't forget the password you select - although it is retrievable, it is better to be something you are likely to remember.
Tick the box to create your free Yahoo email address.( this will be in the form of <your yahoo ID> @yahoo.co.uk - another reason for taking time to get a memorable yahoo ID)
In the box 'Alternate Email' insert your current main email address. More about this later.
Complete the sign up form, remembering to decline any advertising stuff, and insert the 'magic' code at the bottom of the page.
If you have missed anything, the system will prompt you to amend the information.
At this point you may be taken to the Great Harwood Group to complete your application. Don't. Go and have a cup of tea! If you have got this far, you deserve it!.
After your cuppa. check your email for a message from Yahoo. This will ask you to 'verify' your address by noting the verification code and clicking on a link. This confirms your email is a genuine address and will allow you to use it to send and receive messages from the Yahoo system.
(2) Joining the Group
Return to the Great Harwood Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/greatharwood/ once more, and click on 'Join this Group' . Using your new Yahoo ID, enter this and your password, and follow the prompts to proceed.
In due course, you will receive a message to confirm your application has been accepted, and you will now be able to send and receive messages and view all the content in the Files and Photographs section of the Group.
Your Membership.
Click on 'Edit Membership' to edit your membership! Here you can select which email address you wish to use when contacting the Group. It is generally accepted that your 'proper' email address is the most convenient. (if your Yahoo ID sign up has gone to plan, hopefully your email address will be shown, and you need take no action.
Message Delivery
It is important to understand the options here. This is for how you receive, and how often you receive, messages from the group.
Individual emails - Receive individual messages. Each message is sent to you - if there is one message during the day, you get one message. If there are 20 (unlikely!) then you get 20 separate emails.
Daily digest - Receive a daily compilation of many emails in one message. Here you receive all the messages in one email - so you only get one message.
No email - read messages on the web site. You have no emails at all - you just read the messages on the web site.
I should note that if anyone sends an attachment (ie usually a photograph) with a message then only the people receiving the individual emails will receive them. These are usually, though not always, posted to the Photos section in due course.
Members interested in the messages sent to the group, usually go for the first or second option - its entirely personal preference. You can always change the settings at any time - your initial selection is not set in stone.
To send messages to the group either post via the web site, or from your email program e.g. Outlook Express. If the latter, address messages to
greatharwood@yahoogroups.com
Once you are a member, you will have access to the Files - the main archive of the group, and Photos - some of these may well eventually be transferred to the Files.
The message list is also accessible - right back to the first messages in 1999. There is a huge amount of information about Great Harwood people and places in these messages.
(3) The Group
We run a very laid back Group. There is no moderation - everyone is expected to be grown up. There should be no personal abuse. I can only recall one incident since the Group began - shows what grand folk are Arroders!! |
