Ten years appreciating Great Harwood online

The Great Harwood Appreciation Society is a walk down Queen Street; a chat in a shop or pub; a place where you can reminisce about the town and people of your youth and have your memory jogged by others. With members worldwide there is also the chance to catch up with old friends you may not have seen for years. Your memories, however, are history; where were the air raid shelters and barrage balloons; how did Church Bridge get its name and where was it? Chats about everyday subjects have been followed up with photographs from the early 1900s to the present day, so that we now have a large and wide ranging collection.

It isn't all about yesterday though. Proposals to build super-markets are discussed; demolition of mills recorded and the fate of the conker trees on Allsprings Drive was followed with anguish.

Location obviously doesn't matter and neither does nationality. Around a quarter of members live in Great Harwood and the majority of the others used to live here, but there are also descendants of emigrants whose interest in the town grew from the stories told by their parents or grandparents; some have yet to visit us.

So if you want to share memories, just have a look at photos or give your opinions about what's happening in the town today we'll be happy to see you at
